In the post‑Civil War period, the Catawba Presbytery was an important governing body for African American Presbyterians in the Southern Presbyterian Church. It was formed by three white pastors who were dissatisfied with the neglect of formerly enslaved people by the denomination’s leadership. This presbytery became the first all‑Black presbytery in the PC(USA), serving congregations in North Carolina and later expanding into other regions. It also supported educational institutions and mission work for African American communities
Yadkin Presbytery
The Yadkin Presbytery was one of several African American presbyteries within the Synod of Catawba. It served congregations in the Yadkin River region of North Carolina, including many historically Black churches. Like other presbyteries in the synod, it was part of the broader network of African American Presbyterian governance that developed in the late 19th century
Catawba Synod
The Synod of Catawba was established in 1887 as the governing body for African American Presbyterian churches in North Carolina and southern Virginia. It was created from the merger of several presbyteries, including Catawba Presbytery and Yadkin Presbytery, along with Cape Fear and Southern Virginia presbyteries. The synod’s formation followed the growth of African American congregations and the need for a unified governing structure. The Synod of Catawba was the earliest all‑Black synod in the PC(USA) and played a central role in the denomination’s mission work among African Americans. It existed until the 1950s, when it was reorganized into the present‑day Catawba Presbytery of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church
