Who we are
The Friends of Faith Committee was formed in 1990 and was established as a non-profit corporation in 1993. The original Board of Directors included former members of Faith Church, members of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, and local community members. The group was instrumental in obtaining the historic designation, replacing the roof, painting the exterior, and providing much-needed upgrades including HVAC, electrical systems, and bathrooms.
Today, the Board of Directors has been reconstituted to include former members of Faith Church, a descendant of members of Faith, a Bethesda Church member, and a retired pastor from Bethesda. This group has secured the deed to the property, placed it under a historic preservation easement, shored up the foundation, installed a new roof, and is systematically restoring all interior and exterior unique features of the church based on historical photos and documentation. Additionally, historic research of the property and the people associated with the church is ongoing.
The goals of the present-day committee remain. Friends of Faith, Inc. intends for Faith Church to be used for worship services requested by African American congregations, informational and educational programs conducted under the direction of the organization, and periodic historic public viewings. Their goal is to restore, preserve, protect, and maintain this historically significant site and the stories of the people who have worshipped therein.
